HISTORY

The First Marathon Race Winner in History (10/03/1896)
The International Olympia Marathon honors Charilaos Vasilakos (1875–1964), the pioneer who won the first-ever competitive marathon in history in March 1896, before capturing Olympic Silver in Athens weeks later. A law graduate and top state official, Vasilakos also introduced race walking to Greece and was awarded the Golden Cross of the Order of Phoenix. His legacy of pure athletic excellence lives on—inspiring every runner standing at the starting line today.
